Fast food operators Yum! Brands and McDonalds are facing a new food safety scare in China.
The Shanghai Municipal Food and Drug Administration has closed Yum! Brands and McDonalds’ local meat supplier, Shanghai Husi Food, a unit of Aurora, Illinois-based OSI, after a media coverage showed a Shanghai Husi Food staff picking up meat from the floor and mixing expired meat with fresh meat.
Shanghai Husi Food has been supplying McDonald’s in China since 1992 and the KFC and Pizza Hut parent Yum since 2008.
Yum! Brands and McDonalds have already apologised over the footage.
“We will not tolerate any violations of government laws and regulations from our suppliers,” said Yum China.
“If proven, the practices outlined in the reports are completely unacceptable to McDonald’s anywhere in the world,” according to a China-based spokeswoman for McDonald’s.
The scandal is the newest blow against Yum! Brands which just recently reported a sales recovery at KFC after sometime of suffering from a bird flu scare and an earlier controversy over its chicken supply.
