With the new system for issuing visas in the UAE and the news that Dubai will host the World Expo in 2020, there is a sense of optimism in the city, and workers there are already talking about pay hikes and more job opportunities coming their way.
The latest news from the Emirates is that Dubai hopes to submit a bid to host the Olympics. “Hosting the Olympics is a dream. We hope to submit such a bid within the next eight years, God willing,” Ali Omar, the director of Dubai Sports Council (DSC) sports development department, was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.
Last week The General Directorates of Residency and Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Interior said it has completed its technical and services preparations to ensure a "flexible implementation of the new visa and fees system across the naturalization, residency and ports affairs sector". It added in a statement that the new system will be applicable as of the beginning of August and would include new types of visas including multiple entry permits for visit or work, the activation of study visas, and entry permits for medical care and attending conferences.
A representative for the Ministry of Interior for Naturalization, Residency and Ports Affairs said the system would include a new range of entry permits and visas, such as the multiple entry permits for visit or work, the activation of study visas, and entry permits for medical care and attending conferences. Earlier this month, it was reported that the number of residency visas issued by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai increased by 30% on the same period for last year.
In March, the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that citizens of 13 European Union member states will be exempted from the need to acquire pre-entry visas to the UAE. The exemption, which came into effect on March 22, affected Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria. As a result, citizens of all 28 countries in the EU will be allowed to enter the UAE without having to previously apply for a visa.
Dubai’s hosting of the 2020 Expo will have a trickle-down effect on nearly all sectors. Construction sector will benefit immensely as the Expo venue needs to be ready to host the event and the infrastructure development that is again happening across the city will have to be all in place. This will lead to a huge spike in demand for professionals and employees across all levels in construction.
Next in line to benefit will be tourism and hospitality as Dubai prepares to play the host to the millions of visitors who will visit the city. The event will attract more than 25 million visitors to Dubai between October 2020 and April 2021, said Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) director general HE Helal Almarri.
