When Dubai’s first Metro line was inaugurated in 2009, it served 10 stations along the Red Line only. Today, five years later, Dubai Metro serves two lines and 49 stations. Dubai’s rail network will be 421km long and have 197 stations by 2030.
In three days from now, Dubai Metro celebrates its 5th anniversary; a good time to reminisce about the achievements made and see what else the future has to offer.
A glimpse of the next 15 years to come for Dubai Metro.
The Expo factor
Winning the World Expo in 2020 has put the Metro plans on a new track. The importance of connecting the dots in Jebel Ali area, where the World Expo will be held, have become more important than ever. Existing plans were prioritised and new ideas were created.
The Expo site will be located at the crossroads of Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road (E311) and Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road (E77). The Red Line currently runs up to Jebel Ali Metro station, the nearest station to the site.
Four options to extend a Metro line to the site are currently under review. Three of the four options suggest an extension of the Red Line either passing by or cutting through Jebel Ali Free Zone, as the map indicates.
A fourth option, however, shows a more radical alternative. The line would divert at the height of Dubai Marina, and pass Jumeirah Park to run parallel to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.
This option would include a station at Jumeirah Park, and another station near the International Media Production Zone, as the map shows.
The final decision, which will not be taken this year, will have a significant influence on surrounding communities. Especially the fourth option will connect areas that have until now been isolated from the rail network.
Metro extensions coming soon
Although some plans are still under discussion, some communities can already anticipate on a near future connection, as the blueprints have been revealed. Both the Red and the Green Line will be extended to connect to a number of new communities.
On the northern end of the Red Line, the Metro track will be extended to reach Mirdif. The line will run directly from Rashidiya to Mirdif, with no Metro stations, en route.
The Green Line will see a more inclusive extension, connecting 6 communities and adding 11 new stations along the line.
From Jadaf, the Green Line will be extended to Academic City. It will connect to Festival City, and run through The Lagoon, where it will have two stations.
It will then proceed to the Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, where it will have two stations, and connect to International City with three stations.
It will have one station in Silicon Oasis, and two final stations in Academic City.
The Red and Green Line extensions are planned to be realised by 2020.
New Metro lines
There is little reason to believe that Dubai Metro will continue to run on two Metro lines. Talks of new Metro lines have been in the air for quite some time, and although these plans are subject to change, a draft outline has been presented.
Four additional Metro lines are likely to be added to the Dubai Metro network: a Purple Line, Blue Line,Gold Line and Pink Line.
As it seems, the Purple line would form a vital route through the emirate running from north to south, and connecting to all other possible Metro lines. The plan is that it would run from airport to airport, and connect to the Expo site too.
Running parallel to the Purple Line would be the Blue Line. Located deeper into Dubailand, it would run parallel to Dubai Bypass Road, whereas the Purple Line would accompany Emirates Road. This line would run further north than any other line, perhaps reaching Al Khawaneej.
The Gold and Pink Line would form routes from west to east, from as far as the Blue Line to the Red Line, connecting the two lines at several locations.
While the Pink Line seems to run from Al Sufouh, connecting to Dubai tram in the direction of City of Arabia, the Gold Line seems to start somewhere in the Dubai Marina area, head in the direction of Arabian Ranches, move up north to lead back all the way to Deira area.
As the plan goes, all Metro lines would come together at Meydan, where also Etihad Rail is likely to see a station.
The Purple and Gold Line are set to be completed by 2025, while the Blue Line and Pink Line are expected to be realised by 2030.
