The Middle East region’s frontrunners in the retail industry gathered for a memorable gala night on October 13th at the RECon MENA Shopping Centre and Retailer Awards 2014, staged in Dubai at the glitzy Ritz-Carlton DIFC.
Attended by industry stalwarts and graced by pioneers of the retail revolution in the region, the awards night witnessed leading brands and personalities take home awards for their commitment to retail excellence. Beginning with the Retail Professional of the Year award which honored a total of four GOLD winners for their strategic approach to retail and contribution to their brands’ success, the title went to Mr. Khalid Al Sehaibany of Hamat Property Company (Saudi Arabia), Mr. Furqan Athar of McARTHUR + COMPANY (Dubai), Mr. Ishwar Chugani, Giordano Middle East (Dubai) and Mr. Kabir Malkani of Arabian Center & Lamcy Plaza (Dubai).
Retail Excellence in SILVER was bagged by Nahdi In-Store Innovation (Saudi Arabia) and Paris Gallery (The Dubai Mall, Dubai) for customer-centric experience, innovative retail concepts and high service standards while Boux Avenue at Mirdiff City Centre (Dubai) bagged the SILVER for Retail Store Design.
Another foursome took home golden trophies for Retail Store Design. Dhamani 1969 (The Dubai Mall, Dubai), Marina Home Interiors (Mall of Emirates, Dubai), McDonald’s (Dubai Airport, Dubai) and McDonald’s Egypt-Sodic (Egypt) were crowned for signature treatments and captivating designs in their retail environments.
The GOLD for Design & Development went to The Galleria on Al Maryah Island (Abu Dhabi, UAE) for housing the world’s most iconic luxury brands with more than 50 first-in-the-UAE brands while the SILVER honour was clinched by Al-Rashid Mall Qaysariah (Saudi Arabia) for its charming atmosphere that allows visitors to step back in time and experience Saudi Arabia’s historic and culturally rich marketplace.
The New Media category that encourages innovative usage of social platforms invited many entries, reflecting a surge in high-end marketing campaigns and managing smart technologies to reshape consumer experience. The SILVER winners in this category were Indoor Mapping (Arabian Centres, Saudi Arabia), City Centre Wonderland Activation 2014 (Dubai City Centre and Mirdif City Centre, Dubai) and Sharrai Family Campaign (The Red Sea Mall, Saudi Arabia) while the GOLD winner, Monopoly Campaign (Dubai City Centre, Mirdif City Centre and Mall of Emirates, Dubai) swept away the ultimate award for their innovative integrated campaign that brought the game of Monopoly to life with giant in-store board games made better by digital games and promotions.
The SILVER for NOI Enhancement was conferred upon The Motor Show at 360 Mall (Kuwait) for its impressive publicity and social impressions garnered during the five-day run of the motoring event while the SILVER for Advertising was clinched by The Place To Be (Khalidiya Mall, Abu Dhabi, UAE) for its successful ad campaign, augmented by its fresh new logo and a number of new retail openings.
Another foursome SILVER in the Grand Openings, Expansion and Renovation category was bestowed upon The Galleria on Al Maryah Island – Grand Opening (Abu Dhabi), Roshan Mall Relaunch Campaign for Haya Roshan Mall and Roshan Mall (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), Al Ghurair Centre Gets Bigger & Better (Deira, Dubai, UAE) and Al Salaam Mall Launch Campaign (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia).
Other prominent awards that were given away that evening were:
• GOLD in PR Category – Al Ghurair Centre Then & Now (Dubai), Wonderland Campaign (Deira City Centre and Mirdif City Centre, Dubai) and Restaurant Month, The Galleria on Al Maryah Island (Abu Dhabi).
• GOLD in Sales & Promotions Events – Sharrai Family (Red Sea Mall, Saudi Arabia), Monopoly Campaign (Deira City Centre, Mirdif City Centre and Mall of the Emirates, Dubai), Winter Wonderland (City Centre, Bahrain), Mother’s Day Celebrations at Bawabat Al Sharq Mall (Abu Dhabi) and The Soul of the City at New Al Ghurair Centre (Dubai, UAE).
• SILVER in Sales & Promotions Events – Roshan Mall Summer Mega Campaign (Saudi Arabia), Health Campaign Apr at Roshan Mall (Saudi Arabia), Nahdi Loyalty Program-‘Nuhdeek’ (Saudi Arabia), Spring Fashion Promotion (City Centre Sharjah, UAE), Sobhiyat Al Kout (Kuwait) and Prestige Museum (The Avenues, Al Rai (Kuwait).
• GOLD in Cause Related Marketing – Mango Festival (Kadi Mall, Jizan City Saudi Arabia), 2014 ICSC Foundation Community Support Award Winner – Cairo Guinness World Record for the Most Blood Glucose Tests (Mall of Arabia Cairo, Egypt), Weight of Love Campaign (The Avenues, Al Rai Kuwait) and Clothes for Compassion (Oasis Centre, Dubai, UAE).
• SILVER in Cause Related Marketing – Ramadan Activities at Hyatt Plaza Shopping Mall (Doha, Qatar) and Close to You Campaign at Muscat Grand Mall (Oman).
Every attendee was gifted with the 20th Anniversary Book ‘Souqs to Malls’, a visual treat of retail evolution in the MENA region. Attendees were also gifted from Bath and Body Works, Alokozay, Dhamani Jewels, The Pearl Qatar and Patchi.
Culminating the awards ceremony, David Macadam, CEO of the Middle East Council of Shopping Centres (MECSC), said, “We are exhilarated to see such excellence in retail innovation and leadership. We are confident that in the coming year all shopping centers, retailers and service providers will join forces with renewed vigor for an even bigger and more competitive night, planned for November 2015”
