Retail stalwart John Allan could be unveiled as Tesco’s new chairman as early as this week.
Mr Allan, the deputy chairman of electrical retailer Dixons Carphone, is said to be the sole candidate for the high-profile post at the nation’s biggest grocer, which is looking to rebuild its position after losing customers to rival discounters and suffering an accounting scandal last year.
Under stock market regulations, Tesco will have to make an announcement once a new chairman has been appointed, which could be as soon as this week – although there can be no certainty that Mr Allan will receive the board’s backing.
Sir Richard Broadbent signalled his intention to stand down as Tesco chairman in October last year, following pressure from shareholders in the wake of a £263m accounting scandal, but did not set a leaving date.
Mr Allan looked to be the last man standing in the search for the new chairman of the FTSE 100 grocery giant after his rival for the role, Ian Cheshire, former chief executive of B&Q-owner Kingfisher, withdrew from the race.
