The UAE's fighter pilot Major Mariam Al Mansouri topped the 2015 Gulf Business list of the world's most powerful Arab women.
1. MAJOR MARIAM AL MANSOURI, FEMALE FIGHTER PILOT , UAE

The UAE’s first female fighter pilot spent several years working for General Command waiting for the air force academy to open up to female recruits so she could achieve her dream of flying for the armed forces. The now veteran F-16 operations pilot gained international media attention in 2014 when she led airstrike missions against ISIL. A few months earlier, she also picked up the Mohammed bin Rashid Excellence Award, taking home the Pride of the Emirates medal.
2. LUBNA OLAYAN, CEO, OLAYAN FINANCING COMPANY

One of the world’s most influential businesswomen, Olayan manages the billion-dollar Olayan Financing Company (OFC), controlling the investments of a family thought to be worth around $12.4 billion. Established in 1947, the Olayan Group began as a logistics firm, but has grown into a vast conglomerate that owns over 50 companies with stakes in various others.
3. LOUJAIN AL HATHLOUL, DRIVING ACTIVIST

Al Hathloul and her friend, Maysa al-Amoudi, were detained for more than a month at the end of last year for defying a ban on women driving and voicing opinions online. The two have since been sent to a court established to try terrorism cases in Riyadh, making their detention the longest
of any female drivers in Saudi history. Both are strong supporters of a grass roots movement to repeal the ban on women drivers, and together have more than 360,000 followers.
4. HE REEM AL HASHIMY, UAE’S MINISTER OF STATE, DIRECTOR OF DUBAI WORLD EXPO

Having helped Dubai win Expo 2020 at the end of 2013, Al Hashimy has focused her recent efforts on its preparation, while also serving in a number of governmental roles. She boasts extensive international credentials beginning her career as commercial attaché and, later, as deputy chief of mission at the UAE embassy in Washington DC, making her an important outward face of Dubai and the UAE and a role model for Emirati women.
5. SHEIKH MAYASSA BINT AL THANI, CHAIRWOMAN, QATAR MUSEUM AUTHORITY

Having topped ArtReview’s 2013 ranking of the 100 most influential figures on account of her organisation’s vast purchasing power and willingness to spend, the sister of Qatar’s Emir dropped down to 13 in 2014. She still proved Qatar’s determination to become a centre for art, with Doha hosting shows and exhibitions by Richard Serra, Mona Hatoum and Shirin Neshat.
