Swedish furniture giant Ikea is expected to open its first outlet in Bahrain next year.
The store will be managed by the Ghassan Al Sulaiman Development Company, which operates Ikea branches in Saudi Arabia, Gulf Daily News reported on Tuesday.
Three Ikea outlets operate in the kingdom, in Jeddah, Riyadh and Dhahran, and there are plans to open ten more across the Gulf over the next few years, Ikea Saudi Arabia chief executive Saud Ghassan Al Sulaiman said last year.
A 30,000 square metre site is under development in Manama, following initial reports last year that Ikea planned to open its first store in Bahrain. The plans were believed to have been shelved until now.
A spokesman for Ikea Saudi Arabia was quoted as saying: “The Bahrain Ikea store is currently under development, which is expected to be completed and aimed for opening in 2016.
“As we continue our strategy for solid long-term growth that includes expansion in both existing and new markets, we are excited about opening a new Ikea store in Bahrain.
“Venturing into new markets only reaffirms our commitment to creating a better everyday life for many people.”
Ikea also has stores in Dubai Festival City and in Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi, as well as stores in Qatar and Kuwait.
