01/06/2015
We normally associate adrenaline rushes with extreme sports, suspenseful movies, and intense workouts—not our jobs. But at these innovative companies, you’ll find yourself thrilled by your work. From state-of-the-art technologies to never-been-done-before missions, each and every one is a pioneer in its field.

And not only will working at a leading company benefit your career, it’s also just plain cool. Yawning at your desk? We don’t think so. Three trips to the espresso machine just to stay awake? Not gonna happen. Seeing eyes glaze over when you describe what you do? Don’t bet on it.
So, check out these 14 cutting-edge companies, and then send in your application. Because the best part is, they’re all hiring now.
1. Peloton Cycle
0f1

Peloton Cycle, a luxury stationary bike company that comes complete with a touch-screen tablet to allow customers to work out at home while joining virtual classes, stays innovative by hiring a diversity of people.
Rich Couzzi, a lead UI engineer, says many engineers don’t have a degree in computer science. In fact, many of them hold bachelor of fine arts degrees! As a result, there’s no end to the awesome—and unexpected—ideas the engineering team dreams up and delivers on.
But the innovation doesn’t end there. The team knows that Peloton Cycle is the best product on the home fitness market, but the company and the team is ready to explore new business directions—including commercial and international sectors. It’s a huge market, and the company is excited (and ready) to tap it.
2. Bloomberg
0f1 1

“After interviewing at Bloomberg in New York my senior year, I went back to my dorm room and said, ‘Guys, I think I’ve just seen the most technologically advanced building in the history of humanity,’” says James Hodson, Manager of Knowledge Research for R&D.
But it’s not just about the office space. This business and finance media giant is working hard to keep ahead of the changing media landscape, creating new technologies to allow its content to seamlessly move across platforms. “The speed at which technology is advancing and the pulse at which Bloomberg flows technology through its veins is nothing short of amazing,” shares Jeff Fairbanks, Global Head of AV and Media Technology for Technical Operations.
3. LivePerson
0f1 2

Starting out as a leader in customer support chat, LivePerson has evolved with the tech environment and now enables businesses to deliver the best customer experience possible by integrating different interaction methods (chat, voice, targeted content, and video) across different platforms (mobile, web, and tablet), meaning customers can get in touch how they want, when they want.
The LivePerson way of life is to thrive on change and challenge the status quo—and a good employee needs to be ready to dive in and do so. “Even right now, as leaders of the industry, LivePerson’s forward-thinking never stops,” says George Nguyen, an enterprise account manager.
4. Outbrain
0f1 3

Outbrain isn’t just keeping up with the changing online marketing and content discovery space—it’s leading the charge. And while it’s already the world’s largest and most trusted content discovery platform, product manager Lior Charka has an even bigger vision for the company.
“The thing I’m most excited about for the future is the fact that I don’t think we’ve scratched the surface,” he explains. “I think we can do so much better and give so much more—and I’d like to be an integral part of this.”
5. Indico.io
0f1 4

Machine learning is a huge—and still growing—field, and Indico.io is right at the front edge of it. The company, which is headquartered in Boston, is trying to bring machine learning to everyone, regardless of technical background.
Working on something this new means you’re not often going to know all the answers.
“You have to be willing to dive headfirst into the deep end and not necessarily know what’s below the surface. At Indico, you have to be excited about learning,” shares developer Annie Carlson.
6. Black Mountain Systems
0f1 5

Black Mountain Systems is an information technology company, changing the way the financial industry manages workflow, data, and analysis.
The company’s work is innovative, and so are its policies. Employees have the power to set their own schedules and work how they want (yoga ball or stand-up desk, anyone?). Black Mountain Systems also entrusts its team members with a high level of independence—even newbies are given autonomy. With such great options, it’s no wonder the company attracts the best people who bring new ideas to the table and take the product to unimaginable places.
7. Paint Nite
0f1 6

Art education, live entertainment, and cocktails? We’re so glad Paint Nite came up with this innovative combo. At each of its two-hour painting sessions, customers get to indulge their creative sides while sipping on delicious drinks, meeting local artists, and hanging with friends.
But still: It’s just paint, right? How new age innovative is that? “Our customers go to Paint Nite and have a great time, but they don’t realize that we have this massive engine behind the scenes that’s driven by technology,” says David Kimmelman, Director of Talent Acquisition. The company’s growth is all based on being able to innovate its technology in the ecommerce and digital marketing space—and it needs smart minds to help it do so.
8. kCura

kCura has been named one of Chicago’s “best and brightest” companies four years in a row, thanks to its revolutionary e-discovery software, Relativity. The company tackles big data challenges for government agencies, law firms, and corporations.

“The opportunity here is really unique. We have a chance to change the potential collective output of humanity,” explains Kenny Van Zant, Head of Operations.
Founded in 2008 by the leaders of Facebook, Asana’s team has the ambitious and exciting goal of improving productivity for everyone on the planet. The company has developed a web and mobile application that allows other companies and individuals to collaborate—while vastly decreasing the need for email.
Less email? That’s some innovation we can all get behind.
10. VMware

VMware has been in the tech industry since 1998, and its game-changing IT solutions and automated delivery systems have earned a lot of recognition—including a #9 spot on Forbes’ 100 Most Innovative Companies in the World list. “Over the years, VMware has continued to have an innovative spirit and the thought leadership to push forward,” says engineer Mike Valley.
The company is also on Forbes’ ranking of America’s best employers. Innovation and awesome employee policies? That’s a killer combo.
11. Rubicon Project
0f1 10

With a relentless mission to pioneer an advertising technology revolution, Rubicon Project has worked hard to hire great people, build innovative projects, and establish itself as an industry-leading platform.
"There are a lot of technologies and solutions in this space to solve inefficiencies—but being at the forefront is beyond exciting," says Duc Chau, co-founder and SVP of Research and Development.
Even with 14 offices and 500-plus employees, Rubicon Project is holding on to that entrepreneurial, all-ideas-welcome vibe you can usually only find at startups.
12. Gap Inc.
0f1 11

Gap Inc. shows its innovation in a different way: its emphasis on gender equality. Not only is the company 74% women, but three out of its five flagship brands are run by women, and Gap Inc. has pay equality. In other words, women and men are paid equally for equal work—that’s dollar for dollar, on average, across the global organization.
(Oh, and don’t worry: There’s plenty of technological innovation, too. The GapTech team continues to keep Gap Inc.’s brands on the cutting edge of the industry.)
