London’s Tube network has had its busiest day in history when almost five million people clambered onboard.
Transport for London said October 9 broke records for the number of passengers to travel on the Tube as 4.735 million people boarded trains on the network.
It broke the previous record of 4.734 million people who used the Tube on a single day in November last year, while the highest total before that was during the London 2012 Olympics.
Meanwhile the highest weekly total was recorded in the last seven days of October, when 28.614 million journeys were completed – up from a record of 28.345 million journeys in December last year.
Transport bosses said they expect the records to be shattered again by the end of this year as the capital’s population boom continues.
Nick Brown, LU’s Managing Director, said: “The Tube is carrying more customers than ever before as London’s economy and population continue to grow.
“This is why we are continuing to invest all of our income to modernise the service, improving reliability, train capacity and frequency and upgrading major stations to reduce congestion.”
The total number of Tube journeys has risen by a third since 2001, official figures show.
TfL said ongoing improvements to the Underground network represented “one of the largest programmes of infrastructure investment in the world” as each Tube line undergoes upgrades in the biggest overhaul for 60 years.
Work is ongoing Victoria, Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street stations and upgrades are due to be completed at Holborn, Bank and Camden Town stations, TfL said.
