McDonald's has opened a new high-tech restaurant offering fresh pastries and a deli-style salad bar in the latest experiment to revamp its reputation as people's diets change.
The McDonald's Next in Hong Kong is the first in a new breed of branches, as the burger chain re-invents itself to fit with their customers lifestyles amid falling global sales.
The branch, in the Admiralty district, has touch-screen computers where people can place their orders without queuing for a counter, and self-ordering kiosks.
There are two choices of 'salad base greens', two kinds of cheese and three salad dressing flavours, all on show in the 'theatre kitchen', with ingredients and preparation all in view.
Other items on the menu include asparagus and couscous, and they are all on show in glass cabinets in front of the sales assistants, similar to what you may expect in a deli.
The restaurant is offering table service after 6pm, and is fitted with wireless mobile phone chargers - similar to many coffee shop chains - and offers free wifi.
But those wanting a burger can still order from the normal menu - as well as having the Create Your Taste option, which allows diners to build their own burger with gourmet ingredients.
Even the decor is different, made almost entirely of wood, glass and stainless steel, and using long, wide tables and ambient lighting to give the restaurant a more relaxed feel.
It is the latest in a move that indicates a change of direction for MdDonald's after CEO Steve Easterbrook took the job last year.
The golden arches are one of the only recognisable things in the restaurant, which seems to be part of a number of new experiments with new menus and formats, since a disappointing first-quarter results in 2015
The new restaurant in Hong Kong is experimenting with table service after 6pm, something which was also trialed in restaurants in the US last year
They have tested table service and serving kale in the US last year, and recently announced their plans to stop using eggs from caged hens.
In Canada, they announced a new menu at the end of last year, including pastries and three new salads to try and adapt to customers' tastes.
The chain also announced it intends to stop using chicken and milk from animals treated with hormones, indicating that it is trying to adapt to a more health-conscious customer base.
McDonald's has been experimenting with new methods and menus since it announced disappointing first quarter results, with an 11 percent drop in revenue and sales down 2.3 per cent.
But since embarking on a turnaround, things have improved, as did the chain's third quarter results, with sales up four per cent, but revenue still down five per cent.
