Franchising, retail, business

On May 18th of this year, excitement reigned. Stories appeared in print and on TV. Nevada’s first IKEA store would be opening for business.
No longer did IKEA fans have to order through catalogs and hope they liked the products they ordered.
Nor did they have to travel to California, Arizona or Utah to see IKEA household items in person. At the corner of the 215 Beltway and S. Durango Drive, a 351,000-square-foot IKEA store would now welcome customers. Situated on 26 acres and including 1300 parking spaces, the new IKEA store was described by the Las Vegas Review-Journal as “the largest store in Nevada eclipsing the current titleholder, a 245,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter at Tropicana Avenue and Fort Apache Road”.
IKEA was founded in 1943 in Sweden by 17-year-old Ingyar Kamprad. The initials IKEA stand for the founder’s initials and for the first letters of Elmtaryd (E) and Agunnaryd (A), the farm and village where the founder grew up. The company began selling pens, wallets, picture frames, table runners, watches, jewelry and nylon stockings, later branching into furniture and finally designing and making its own furniture. IKEA came to the U.S. in 1985.
