A Round Table Pizza franchisee closed six locations in Orange County this month.
Restaurants in Irvine, Costa Mesa, Foothill Ranch, Rancho Santa Margarita, Newport Beach and Lake Forest shut down because the franchisee ran into financial troubles, an official said.
Ted Storey, senior vice president of business development for Round Table, said the company is hoping reopen them.
“The closed restaurants are all owned by the same franchisee and were closed as a result of financial issues solely related to this franchisee,” Storey said in statement. “We are currently working with the landlords of these locations to get them reopened as soon as is possible.”
Bill Larson founded the first Round Table Pizza in Menlo Park in 1959. The Concord-based chain primarily operates in the West. The chain recently opened a new concept, Round Table Pizza Wings Brew, in Vallejo. The new eatery emphasizes Round Table’s new line of “crispy Ulti Wings,” the company said.
The franchise closures come as other restaurant brands have called it quits as the year comes to a close.
On Monday, Cypress-based Real Mex Restaurants, the nation’s largest operator of casual dining Mexican restaurants, closed 14 locations.
Of those, six were in Southern California: an Acapulco in Los Angeles; El Torito restaurants in Burbank, Long Beach (PCH), Riverside (La Sierra) and Temecula; and an El Torito Grill in Torrance. The restaurants were targeted for a variety of reasons, including “natural lease expirations, cost of deferred maintenance, fiscal performance or unfavorable lease terms,” the company told the Register in a statement.
The other restaurants were an Acapulco in San Marcos, El Torito restaurants in National City and Rohnert Park and Chevys Fresh Mex locations in Fresno, Modesto, San Ramon, South Lake Tahoe and Henderson, Nev. Last month, the company closed an El Torito in Mira Mesa.
Real Mex said the closures strengthen the company’s portfolio as it tries to acquire a new concept. With the recent closures, Real Mex now operates 84 restaurants. The core brands are El Torito (43), Chevys (26) and Acapulco (9).
