Discounter Aldi says it will open 1,000 stores over the next seven years as it accelerates openings encouraged by recent strong sales figures. Speaking at The Grocer Gold Awards last week, joint GMD Matthew Barnes said it plans to open 65 new stores a year from next year. “For the foreseeable future, 65 new stores a year is not out of the question. We think 1,000 stores is an absolute possibility,” he said.
Private equity backed food and drink giant SSP is seeking a £2bn listing on the stock market by the end of this week as it posts a 12.5 per cent rise in sales. Retailers Card Factory, Pets at Home, AO World and Just Eat have struggled in the IPO market, but discount store B&M Bargains enjoyed a healthy shares lift since its float last week.
Tesco have merged its Metro and Express divisions in a management restructure as it ramps up its targeting of the convenience sector, according to the Grocer. Tony Hoggett becomes retail director, overseeing all superstores and Extra formats while the supermarket will scrap its previous format-based structure. All superstores and Extras will now be group according to geography – north, central and south.
