Growing Concepts of Multi Unit Operators
Concepts that have grown by at least 5% (if less than 50 units).
San Antonio, TX-based WHATABURGER (founded 1950) has increased by 142 units, from 735 to 877 (19% growth). This quick serve burger concept is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a $4-$12+ per person price range. Locations seat about 50 and offer drive-thru service. Trading areas are AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, LA, MS, NM, OK and TX. About half the stores are franchised.

Murfreesboro, TN-based DEMOS’ RESTAURANTS (founded 1989) has increased by 1 unit, from 4 to 5 (25% growth) with the addition of a new concept called Peter D’s. These family/casual steakhouse restaurants are open for lunch and dinner, with a $10-$30+ per person check average. The restaurants have full bar service and average seating for about 250. Catering is available. All the restaurants are located in TN.
Florida-based DEXTER’S WINE BAR-CAFE has increased by 1 unit, from 3 to 4 (33% growth). The restaurants are upscale, serving American cuisine. Per person check average is $15-$50+, with full bar service and seating for about 150. Catering service is available. All the restaurants trade in FL.
Emerging and Re-emerging Concepts
Concepts with 20 units or less who grew by at least 2 units.
Milton, MA-based NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE’S (founded 1994) has increased by 2 units, from 20 to 22 (10% growth) and entered into NH and RI. The restaurants are family/casual, open for lunch and dinner, with a $10-$30+ per person check average. Locations have full bar service and seating for about 175. Online ordering is available. Trading areas are MA, MD, NH, PA, RI and VA.
Bensalem, PA-based CHICKIE’S & PETE’S (founded 1977) has increased by 10 units, from 15 to 25 (67% growth) and entered into KS, MN, NC and OH. This family/casual sports bar concept is open for lunch and dinner, with an $8-$20+ per person check average. Average seating is for about 350, with catering and banquet facilities. Trading areas are KS, MN, NC, NJ, OH and PA.
Repeat Growers

Louisville, KY-based TEXAS ROADHOUSE (NASDAQ:TXRH; founded 1993) has increased by 16 units, from 443 to 459 (4% growth). This family/casual steakhouse concept is open for dinner, with a $10-$30+ per person check average. Locations have full bar and average seating for about 250. Catering is available. Trading areas are AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY and the Middle East. Between 20% and 30% of the restaurants are franchised. We featured this concept on 12/3/13 (8% growth) and on 8/19/14 (6% growth).
Hayward, CA-based MOUNTAIN MIKE’S PIZZA (founded 1978) has increased by 10 units, from 157 to 167 (6% growth). The restaurants are fast casual, open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$12+ per person price range. Locations serve beer and wine and seat around 50. Catering, delivery and online ordering services are available. All stores are franchised and trade in CA, NV, OR and UT. We last wrote about this concept on 9/2/14 (4% growth).
