Franchising, retail, business

DON'T be surprised to see a giant fish and chips staring back at you if you happen to walk along London's Bruton Street this week - it's the handiwork of Kenzo's Humberto Leon ad Carol Lim, who've just done a Changing Rooms-style revamp of the flagship store. Though this was anything but a weekend job, it was in fact a year-and-a-half in the making.
"It's like we moved into a new house and painted everything white," said Lim, in town to supervise the finishing touches. "The whole space feels totally different. It was a really good opportunity, we call it a cleanse of palette. So much of the business has changed - our accessories, our shoe business, we do watches and jewellery now, everything has grown. What's great is we wanted to explore these ideas."
And although Lim feels like she and Leon only stepped into the creative director roles of the brand last year, it has in fact been four years that the duo has cast their magic. "The excitement is just starting. We have a strong business in ready-to-wear so the opportunity for small accessories, we're dying to go deeper and deeper. We do kidswear, there are lots of opportunities to do a lot of different things," said Lim. The dream would be a Kenzo-style department store to encompass all of their many ideas and possibilities. But right now the focus is on this retail spot and location, location, location.
"We want to take into account each city where we open, we want to address the locality of each city and make it feel like a special moment" - which is where those giant fish and chips fit in. You'll appropriately see a bowl of pasta at the Milan store. But the homage to the traditional British grub also takes into account something else too. Lim's own love for the dish.
"We're foodies. I love fish and chips," she confesses, noting The Fryer's Delight to be one of her preferred haunts. "London, aside from New York, is one of my favourite cities. It has a resourcefulness and an energy that reminds me of New York, people make things happen. The hustle, the energy, the optimism, the music, the food. There's something here that's pretty infectious and the style here is amazing - and the individuality. It's really inspiring. People are very creative here."
