CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There are so many shopping days left until Christmas that few people have even begun counting them.
But if you are looking for holiday employment, don't wait until the jack-o'-lanterns disappear before launching your search.
Many stores have already begun the hiring process for such seasonal help. For example, Summit Mall will have a job fair Oct. 3 featuring more than 15 retailers with openings. Toys"R"Us and Kohl's are among the national retailers hiring for Christmas positions at their stores throughout Northeast Ohio.
Nationally, retailers are expected to hire nearly 800,000 workers, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., the global outplacement company based in Chicago. That figure is similar to last year's, but still lower than the number of holiday workers hired a few years ago. Both are considerably higher than the number of seasonal workers hired during the depths of the Great Recession and into the early part of the recovery.
"Despite a relatively strong economy and high expectations heading into the holiday season, last year's retail employment gains were 4.0 percent lower than the 786,800 retail jobs added in the final three months of 2013," said a Challenger, Gray & Christmas news release. "The 2013 holiday hiring total was the highest since 1999, when retailers added nearly 850,000 extra seasonal workers to their payrolls."
Retailers did steady hiring during this spring and summer, which means they will probably be less likely to hire at 2013 levels, said the company's CEO John A. Challenger. He cited Labor Department figures showing that retail employment had increased by 449,500 from March through August. That was up from 437,000 a year earlier.
"In addition to steady hiring leading up to the holiday season, changes in the way consumers shop are making it possible for stores to meet increased holiday demand with fewer extra workers," Challenger said in a news release. "When retailers do add holiday workers, fewer of those jobs are in traditional spots, such as sales clerk or cashier. We are also seeing holiday jobs added outside of the retail sector."
Such jobs include those at UPS and FedEx.
"Last year, UPS and FedEx announced plans to add a combined 145,000 seasonal workers, nearly double the 75,000 planned hires reported in 2013," the release stated. "Additionally, online retailer Amazon.com, announced plans to hire 80,000 holiday workers for its nationwide network of warehouses in 2014, up from 70,000 the previous year."
Here are some companies hiring for local openings:
Summit Mall – A job fair will be held Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the mall, located on Route 18 and Ghent Road in Fairlawn.
Employers recruiting include: Aeropostale, Ann Taylor, Aveda Experience Center, Brookstone, Christopher & Banks, Gap, Justice, Moochie & Co., Motherhood Maternity, New York & Co., Pandora, Pink, Spencer Gifts, Things Remembered, Versona, Victoria Secret and Visionworks.
Some of these companies are not only hiring for seasonal positions, but for permanent part-time and management openings as well.
"Prospective employers are looking to fill a number of positions at various levels of experience," said Heather Taylor, director of marketing and business development for the mall, in a news release. "Attending the job fair will be a great way to see open positions and find the right fit for you."

Toys"R"US -- Toys"R"Us is planning to hire more than 500 seasonal employees in Northeast Ohio. The retailer intends to hire 40,000 nationwide, including a total of 1,500 seasonal workers in Ohio.
The company said new employees would begin work as early as October.
"Most holiday jobs are part-time, offering employees flexible work schedules throughout the week. Seasonal store employees will average 18 to 20 hours per week, and up to 30 hours during peak season, dependent on an individual's availability," stated a company news release.
Prospects may be promising for those looking to stay on after Christmas. Last year, 20 percent of the seasonal workforce was retained after the holiday season.

Kohl's intends to hire an average of 50 associates per store, including at those in Northeast Ohio.
