Woolworths is scrapping frequent flyer points and replacing them with food and liquor discounts in a bid to win more customers and claw back market share.
The supermarket giant has confirmed it will end the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme on December 31.
It will also replace its Everday Rewards card with a new scheme called Woolworths Rewards that allows shoppers to earn $10 off their groceries.
Customers will earn “Woolworths dollars” when they buy items marked with an orange ticket at Woolworths and BWS stores.
When they reach $10, that amount will be taken off the customer’s next shopping bill.
Woolworths says the scheme will allow shoppers to earn money off their groceries at least twice as fast as its major competitors’ loyalty schemes.
A company statement said surveys had shown that customers want money off their shopping bill and the majority of them felt most supermarket loyalty programs took too long to earn enough points to be meaningful.
“Rewards will ensure they receive many more offers on products they know and love or are likely to try,” the statement said.
Qantas said it was still working with Woolworths on a new partnership from 2016.
