31/01/2018 - Bahrain Duty Free Shops (BDFS) has confirmed to DFNI the signing of a key agreement with Gulf Air Group Holding BSC (GFG) and Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) regarding the core duty-free shopping offers in the new Bahrain International airport terminal due to open in 2019.
As reported, the new passenger terminal will occupy around 220,000sq m, four-times the size of the current airport and 9,000sq m of duty-free space. The departure hall will be spread across 4,600sq m and two premium-class check-in halls will span across an area of more than 5,000sq m. In arrivals, there will be a 1,000sq m duty-free shop, 36 passport-control booths, five E-gates and eight baggage-reclaim belts.
Confirming the agreement a BDFS spokesman said: “We hereby confirm the establishment of the agreement between Gulf Air Group Holding and Bahrain Duty Free Shop Complex which relates to the duty-free offers in the new terminal.”
Speaking as part of a wide-ranging interview following the completion of its departures renovation project at Bahrain International airport last year, BDFS general manager Bassam Alwardi told DFNI: “The next big thing as you know is the new terminal which is due to open in mid-2019. We have started working on this already and it won’t be long before we have to go and talk to our suppliers about this new initiative. This is a big thing for us and obviously retail and food and beverage will be part of the expansion. We definitely look forward to working with the airport authority on this.”
