This is the story of alfredo di lelio who, in 1908, created ‘fettuccine all’Alfredo’. His dish is still served today by his niece ines di lelio at their restaurant ‘il Vero Alfredo-Alfredo di Roma’, Piazza Augusto Imperatore 30, Rome.
OUR HISTORY:
1908 - My grandfather Alfredo Di Lelio, created ‘Fettuccine all’Alfredo’ whilst working at a small restaurant run by his mother Angelina in Piazza Rosa, Rome. My grandmother Ines had lost her appetite during her pregnancy with my father Armando and my grandfather, concerned for her health and the health of his unborn son, tempted her tastebuds with the creation of the very tasty ‘Fettuccini all’Alfredo’. Little Armando was born on 26th February 1908.
1914 – Alfredo Di Lelio opened his own restaurant ‘Alfredo’s’ in Via della Scrofa, Rome. The rental contract, which we still hold, shows that he signed the agreement on 19th November 1914 and continued to offer outstanding hospitality until it was sold in 1943, during the second world war.
1950 – After the war Alfredo Di Lelio decided to reopen his restaurant along with his son Armando. Now renamed ‘Il Vero Alfredo – Alfredo Di Roma’ and located in Piazza Augusto Imperatore, Rome, the restaurant has gone from strength to strength under the guidance of his nephew Alfredo.
OVER 100 YEARS LATER - It is now managed by his niece Ines Di Lelio and is renowned for its famous ‘Gold Cutlery’, which was donated, by American actors Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks in 1927 in gratitude for the outstanding hospitality which was shown back then and continues to be shown today!
