Franchising, retail, business

Hi, how are you and how’s your business?
In the last few months, there has been lots of speculation about business and how it's faring in the current economic climate, and I've been asked a few times now how my business is doing post-Brexit! It's an interesting question, isn’t it?
Before the referendum as the tension mounted and the media whipped the country into panic mode, the team and I were worried, really worried; we were getting plenty of enquiries, but nobody was committing to anything. Buyers started holding out to see what the referendum results were going to be and how it would all play out in the political arena. They were saying that they were uncomfortable buying in the current climate.
Add to that the fact that out of 54 enquiries from sellers, we actually only listed three businesses, absolutely unheard of! So yes to say we were worried is an understatement. All I could think was, I don’t even care which way the vote goes let's just get back to normal!
Now I did care and I did vote - but let's not go there today - the reality was that whatever happened I wanted my businesses back on track. The week after the vote it was obviously still quiet, and we along with most of the country were thinking what's going to happen? Something had to give; then suddenly it was just as if everyone thought right let's get back to normal and we listed six businesses in one week!Hurray, we're back to normal, still picking up the slack but back to normal nonetheless.
So what happened to get us back to normal, who knows? We increased our social media presence and ensured that the messages we put out on our mailers were helpful and positive. The team went through the mailing list with a fine toothcomb, talking to people who, in the main, wanted to wait and see. I don't know whether it was that that put us back on track, or just people genuinely thinking let's get back to normal, I don't suppose we'll ever really know, I’m just pleased we’re busy.
Interestingly other business owners, including franchisees and franchisors I’ve spoken to, have had a similar experience. Most have picked up speed again, but there are some out there who are still struggling. Anyone who thinks that the political environment doesn’t have a direct impact on business is fooling themselves. General elections, bank interest rates, the stock market etc. do have an impact, but this was something else. It's amazing how business, for us, seemed to stand still, hold its breath and wait - then breathe out and say ok, it's safe, let's carry on!
We are preparing to celebrate our 10th anniversary in 2017, and we will be pushing harder than ever before to make sure that we develop and grow. We are excited now to see what the future holds for us, and our franchisee and franchisor clients. Our plan is to be busy, as the country starts a new chapter in history then so shall we.
So what’s your take on this? How busy are you?
