Franchising, retail, business

That is according to Ten Trinity Square’s new wine Director Jan Konetzki.
In a new partnership, which sees the launch of the first and unique Chateau Latour Discovery Room at the new Private Members Club, Jan is creating an exclusive wine list which will be served with food by Anne-Sophie Pic. The wine list will be 50% from the Artemis portfolio of wines and the remainder will be a blend from France, Europe and rest of the world. It will include some new producers.
Chateau Latour has been shaking things up in the Bordeaux system in the last few years and the Chateau Latour Discovery Room initiative with Ten Trinity Square Private Club is another way in which it continues to evolve things differently.
For anyone that doesn’t know Chateau Latour is one of the most feted and consistently expensive Bordeaux wines in the world. Along with 4 other Chateau it sits at the top of a pyramid of classification made in 1855 in Bordeaux classifying the best Bordeaux chateaux into 5 tiers of quality. The vineyard is situated in the small Bordeaux area called Pauillac and produces 3 wines – Pauillac (by Ch Latour), Les Forts des Latour and Le Grand Vin. In retail terms they sell for between £40’ish to thousands for the best and older celebrated vintages.
From the 2012 vintage, Chateau Latour bucked the system of trading in Bordeaux, by stopping all sales en Primeur and instead selling to traders only when the wine has been finished and bottled. En Primeur is the system whereby the trader buys the wine whilst still in oak barrels only taking delivery of it after finishing and bottling. This system leads to much speculation in the market, which Chateau Latour is hoping to remove for its wines.
In past decades communication directly to the market had been scant. So for Chateau Latour to take this partnership step into the London market is significant in the context of high level fine wine marketing initiatives.
As a member of the Ten Trinity Square Club you will be able to buy Chateau Latour by the glass, when the club opens in Quarter 2 later on this year.
For this legendary Chateau to step outside its Pauillac home and allow its name to be used in this way is a seismic shift of emphasis in communications strategy and methodology.
As for Jan’s favourite wine – he kindly gave me two –
For ‘everyday’ drinking style the second wine of Chateau Grillet (France’s smallest Appelation Controlee region). ‘Pontcin’ is a white Cotes du Rhone bottled as their second wine with a hint of oak. Subtle, but interesting and great value.
His favourites from the Latour portfolio is Les Forts des Latour from one of the so called under-rated vintages such as 2004, 1999. They are drinking superbly now and represent a beautiful blend of the Cabernet and Merlot varieties.
