Retailers return to high street even as more shoppers go online

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) today reported a drop in the vacancy rates for shops in UK towns and cities, with the number of empty stores falling from 10.6 to 10.1 per cent in the last quarter. In London, the number of unfilled premises is even lower at only 7 per cent.
This news comes in spite of the fact that footfall on UK high streets continues to fall on average 0.5 per cent each month in the last quarter. Whilst London has the fewest number of empty stores, it has also experienced the steepest drop in footfall, down 1.8 per cent since July 2013. Only two regions, Scotland and the south west of England, recorded an increase in the number of shoppers.

Dollar General Woos Family Dollar With $9 Billion Bid

Dollar General Corp. (DG) offered about $9 billion for Family Dollar Stores Inc., (FDO) excluding debt, setting off a bidding war for a company that had agreed to a $8.5 billion takeover by Dollar Tree Inc. last month.
Dollar General plans to pay $78.50 a share in cash, compared with Dollar Tree’s bid of $74.50 a share in cash and stock, according to a statement today. The deal will generate $550 million to $600 million in cost savings annually three years after its completion, Dollar General said. Including debt, the purchase is worth $9.7 billion.
Dollar General, based in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, is fighting to keep its perch at the top of the dollar-store industry. A merger between its two rivals would have created a new market leader, escalating competition at a time when Wal-Mart Stores Inc. also is looming with new smaller-format stores.

When it comes to food sales, retailers across the U.S. know that times have been pretty tight over the past few years. Dollar sales haven’t really increased since 2012 and unit sales have been relatively flat for five years or more. And with discretionary categories stuck in neutral, Todd Hale, SVP, Consumer & Shopper Insights, says retailers are aiming to “fish where the fish are.” And that means innovating in the categories that can still drive growth in the face of tough economic headwinds.
But where these categories are located is affecting stores as well.

Where to Eat in Downtown Los Angeles

12/08/2014
Even to locals, the transformation of Downtown Los Angeles is hard to believe. Less than a decade ago, there were really two Downtowns: the high rises and upscale lunch spots of the Financial District and... everything else. Cheap eats ruled the day, taco carts crawled the late night streets, and the occasional ramen joint or yakitori spot could be found among the warehouses and shuttered storefronts. But for the most part Downtown was dead.
These days, revitalization is so rampant that it's hard to recognize the same boulevards that used to be near-empty ten years ago. Young, urban crowds flock to bars, restaurants, art galleries and entertainment venues nightly, and it's no longer a surprise to see someone on the streets at all hours of the night. Of course, with the influx of people and money comes competition, and Downtown is quickly becoming one of the most contested core neighborhoods for food and drink in this otherwise decentralized city.

Non è la prima volta che i due nomi vengono associati, comunque.

Photographers have grown weary of the ‘peacocks’ posing outside catwalk shows. Now fashion bloggers are pointing their lenses elsewhere to find authentically interesting looks
In 2013, legendary style editor Suzy Menkes published an essay titled “The circus of fashion” in the New York Times. In it, she nailed the backlash against the crowds who hang around outside various fashion weeks, suggesting that they – the stars of street style – were eclipsing what was happening on the catwalks. “We were once described as ‘black crows’,” she wrote, “but today, the people outside fashion shows are more like peacocks than crows.”

La vera storia dell’amatriciana

05/08/2014

Sales of Italian luxury group Prada have slowed as demand in Asia and Europe weakens.
Prada’s revenue rose just one per cent to 1.75 billion euros ($2.34 billion) in the six months through July. The Asia Pacific markets recorded overall revenue growth of just two per cent at constant exchange rates with performance remaining weak in Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Revenue in Europe declined one per cent both at constant and current exchange rates, due to a fall in the volume of tourism and by the negative general economic environment which has hit domestic consumption.

Politicians hail signs of economic recovery, but others foresee little change for the country's jobless millions
Just streets away from Madrid's only three-Michelin-starred restaurant, peeling buildings in the city's Tetuán neighbourhood have been plastered with posters featuring the faces of five women. Placed at eye level, each a few yards apart, the women's portraits are accompanied by descriptions of their situation. "I'm one of the 23,000 people in Tetuán who has to decide between eating or paying the bills," reads one poster. "My daughters and grandchildren barely get by on my €600-a-month pension," reads another.
The Invisibles of Tetuán campaign was dreamed up by local activists after city officials disagreed with them over the need for a community food bank.

Pharmacy giant Alliance Boots has sold 55 per cent of its business to US pharmacy Walgreens in a £9bn deal.
The deal, which does not qualify for a controversial tax inversion, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2015 and will see Walgreens keep its headquarters in the US amid increased scrutiny from US tax authorities.
Chief executive Greg Wasson said: “We took into account all factors, including that we could not arrive at a structure that provided the company and our board with the requisite level of confidence that a transaction of this significance would need to withstand extensive IRS review and scrutiny.”
